Recessionista Palm Bitch

May 18th, 2012

Purchase info: Buy it here.

I really love his Palm Bitch-y Vivid Enamel Stretch Bracelet which retails for $34.50. And I’m a stacker, so I love that it comes in aqua (currently waitlisted), hot pink, orange, purple and white. The oval and triangle stations that make up this gold-tone bracelet are accentuated by vividly colored epoxy enamel. You can coordinate them with your little black summer dress or a tunic over white jeans or khakis. QVC even posted a video on their Web site so you can see Robert at work. Gorgeous!

Our great friend, Robert Verdi, who works with a wide range of celebrities from Eva Longoria Parker to Kathy Griffin called me the other day to discuss Real Housewives of New Jersey (he knows all about them and is a Jersey native) and we got to talking about their jewelry.

Us Weekly recently shot the ladies for our new cover and I had two minutes to pull looks together for them. We had no jewelry. Later, Robert told me how he wished he knew so he could have sent over his stuff. Huh?! He’s got his own line of baubles available on QVC! Who knew? And you know what, it’s hot.

The arrival of spring—despite the rain—makes it very tempting to throw on a pair of printed pants with a white T-shirt several days a week. But how do you keep the repeat-offender outfit fresh? Take a cue from the lavender-haired Caroline Kan (above), who landed on Stockholm Streetstyle when she brought a little life to her separates with a ruby red Indian wedding necklace that she snagged on eBay. If your own auction trawling isn’t as successful, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite statement pieces below.

Real-life royals are among the competitors at Veuve Cliquot’s annual Polo Classic—Prince Harry among them—so Sunday hats, that staple of prim garden parties, are always among the fashion musts. There were plenty on display on Governors Island yesterday, but Veronica Webb (left) and Rachel Roy (right) went for a more modern take on the topper. Each came in a menswear-style fedora (and, by the way, a Rachel Roy outfit): Roy paired hers with a sleeveless blouse, knee-length shorts, and oxford flats, while Webb went a more feminine route in a sleeveless printed sheath with strappy sandals. Which do you prefer—Roy’s boyish bravado, or Webb’s more ladylike look?

Forget London—these days, it’s China that’s calling. The rest of the Far East, too. Designers and fashion labels have been courting the region for years, but in the last season, we’ve seen them really up the ante. There was Marc Jacobs’ Asian-inspired Spring show for Louis Vuitton, to begin with. Then Miuccia Prada staged a version of her own Spring presentation in Beijing last week. But it’s not just those two. Our senior market editor, Marina Larroude, clocked an Asian influence in Spring shoes, bags, and jewels, which she’s rounded up for the latest In the Mood For: Asia Major.

The Asian inspiration has translated into a boom season for Asian models, too. This week, Riccardo Tisci went with an all-Asian casting for his Givenchy Haute Couture presentation. And Vera Wang chose a Chinese face for her latest campaign shots, debuting exclusively here: Next’s Shu Pei Qin, styled by Lori Goldstein and lensed by Carter Smith at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York.

Fired Up for Spring, with Color at Calvin

May 14th, 2012

I don’t remember seeing so much color in a Calvin Klein show in seasons. The label presented its accessible collection for Spring this week, and while the looks were mostly monotone, they didn’t want for brightness. Skinny jeans came in yellow, shades of coral , red, and aqua, and red suits were paired with contrast orange button-downs. Blasts of cool, summery white, as in warm-weather-perfect white trousers and an all-white suit, offered an alternative. But what really caught my eye was a long shirtdress in bright vermilion. It had the fluid lines and easy drape of many of the pieces in the collection, as well as a slightly seventies chic. It’d be perfect to wear during a summer day in the city, or to take away on a trip, pairing it with the flats and raffia bags that were all over the Spring runways. I’m planning my winter holidays in sunny Brazil at the moment, and I only wish it was in stores now.

Not all of us are willing or able to shell out a cool grand for a boot that only Beyonce and Rihanna could afford. But these? No problem.

Kim Gordon Gets Some Air

May 11th, 2012

“She was asking for toiles!” said Surface to Air menswear designer Aldric Speer, during a fête at the label’s Marais store yesterday evening. The “she” in question is Sonic Youth front woman Kim Gordon. And the toiles were for her recently released collaboration with the cult French design collective. “It’s the first time we’ve ever sent toiles to someone. We were like, really? She was very hands-on,” raved the designer. But what else would one expect from the rock goddess, who’s known not only for her groundbreaking vocals and guitar riffs but for championing a young Marc Jacobs and briefly running her own lines in the nineties?

Along with Surface to Air co-founder Jeremie Rozan, who cites Sonic Youth’s nineties tour with Nirvana as a pivotal moment in his creative development, Gordon hosted not one, but two soirées in celebration of her fashion feat. The first was a cozy but jam-packed in-store event, where fashion and music folk, including Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, sipped Champagne and previewed the graphic orange, white, and gray collection. “I think fashion really feeds off music and has a lot to do with attitude. And rock music is all about attitude,” said Gordon, looking rock star cool in a pair of leather pants and one of her printed Surface to Air silk tops. “We’re always inspired by music. It’s one of the specificities of our company. Music is every day for us, both professionally and personally,” said Rozan. (His favorite Sonic Youth song, for the record? “Sunday.”)

Later that evening, the likes of Julie Gilhart, who arrived with silver confetti still in her hair from Alber Elbaz’s Lanvin celebration, Pamela Love, and Irina Lazareanu packed into Silencio for the after-party, which featured a live performance by Gordon. Peering out from beneath her aubergine Maison Michel fedora, Lazareanu noted, “Kim’s obviously an icon. This is such an eclectic collaboration and I think fashion and music are always a good combination. They go hand in hand.” A musician in her own right, Lazareanu revealed that she’ll be playing a new single at the Purple magazine party on the 7th.

Around midnight, Gordon took the stage for a performance complete with a model crawling backward across the stage in one of the collaboration’s easy orange frocks, to a pit of screaming fans. After the show, a trio of admirers shared a cigarette and discussed Gordon’s on-stage antics. “That was epic! She’s legendary!’ yelled one boy between puffs. From the clothes to the show, Gordon’s definitely still got it.

Accessory Alert The New Ruby Slippers

May 10th, 2012

Brilliant, traffic-stopping red has made a big splash on the runways these past few seasons, lending flash to everything from suiting to coats. This season saw the trend extend to footwear, too. At Thakoon (left), Alexander Wang (center), and Marc Jacobs (left), vibrant, slightly pointed pumps and booties got an added jolt from a wild and sometimes shiny hit of the hue.
